Nutritious Food Sanctuary in Bangkok

As much as I love all things new and exciting, there are a few, in particular places I visit regularly, that make me a real creature of habit.

Ramayana Retreat

One of these things that keeps me loyally returning for more, time and again, are my tried and tested food happy places. Wherever I travel, I am delighted when I can add another to my list. In Bangkok city, great food options abound, but my heart and my stomach always feel a sense of warmth and sheer satisfaction, every time I walk up to the green and calming oasis of Rasayana Raw Food Café.

Nutritious Food Sanctuary in Bangkok

Nestled deep inside Sukhumvit Soi 39, off Soi Phrom Mit, Rasayana is a retreat, providing wellbeing solutions from tip to toe, inside and out. I have yet to try their spa treatments, yoga classes or detox programs, since I always instantly gravitate to their delicious raw food café menu. The café is outdoors with plenty of seating and fans blowing a pleasant breeze, and occasionally if needs must their yoga hall turns into a temporary dining room, such as if there are street works interrupting the usual calm – Rasayana is very mindful towards their guests.

This is a place you can easily go and sit on your own to eat, but if you show up with friends, you get to share plates. In my opinion, the more you can try the better; the food is simply delicious and nutritious. Everything is raw. Their food contains no meat, wheat, dairy, processed or pasteurized ingredients, and almost everything is organic. They grow a lot of their own sprouts and wheatgrass, and nothing is heated above 42°C – raw!

Mexican Taco Cups

I tend to start off with one of their refreshing drinks, such as the ‘Electrolyte Surge’, which is a blend of celery and coconut water. I don’t even have to have the menu to hand, to know I also want the ‘Mexican Taco Cups’ – that’s a given! Four crunchy baskets of dehydrated shredded vegetables, filled with a spicy tomato, coconut shoot and cilantro salsa, surrounding a small salad with their homemade dressing and the juiciest semi-dried tomatoes. Yum!

Delicious flaxseed tortilla chips and guacamole

Sometimes I take the hand-rolled, cut vegetable sushi or the pomelo salad. The Hawaiian Pizza has a delicious crust made of sprouted sunflower seeds, macadamias and cashew nuts, topped with marinated veggies, red onions, Thai pineapple and a cashew sauce. Another new favourite are the raw nachos, consisting of live flaxseed crackers, served with a zesty salsa and creamy guacamole.

The Açai-Mazing Bowl at Rasayana Raw Food Cafe

An incredible breakfast option is the ‘Açai-mazing Bowl’: frozen acai blend, topped with housemade granola, sunflower seeds, fresh bananas shaped as stars (below) or hearts, depending on how chef feels. This refreshing bowl is beautifully presented in a coconut shell bowl with a wooden spoon.

Spoilt for choice at the dessert counter

I always recommend leaving room for dessert at Rasayana, because the refrigerated sweet counter is to die for. You start to salivate just looking at it. I think I’ve tried most of them by now, but don’t feel bad at all, since it’s all so healthy – not low in calories, but all good useful nutrition, since it’s all raw food!

Desserts at Rasayana Raw Food Cafe

A few of my top picks include the ‘Salted Caramel Slice’, the ‘Tiramisu Slice’ and the ‘Banofee Pie & Cacao Sauce’, but there’s also ‘Strawberry Cheesecake with Strawberry Coulis’ and ‘Lime Pie’, as well as a delicious and slightly salty ‘Raw Cacao Tart’. Each one is heavenly bliss, but if pushed to name a favourite, I’d take the Salted Caramel Slice again and again. To end the meal, with Rasayana’s compliments, you always receive a warm, comforting lemongrass tea to help with digestion. I can’t wait until I get to go back to this food happy place again!
